ARCHITECTURE - 2016
“The Union” is a unique and striking concept design for a high-rise residential mixed- use building. The site itself is situated in a prime location in the financial district of Colombo creating a vibrant back-drop that compliments the elegance of the design.
Evolving from an infinity symbol, two distinct forms materialized thus reiterating the union of the figures. Taking into consideration the shape of the site an ‘L’ shaped figure emerged. The unique aspect of the building is highlighted by the materials used such as; amber coloured
e-glass, exposed H- irons and raw concrete. The amber coloured glass was used in particular to help achieve transparency throughout the building. The transparency maintained throughout the design reflects the dynamic environment of the building by displaying the movement within the structure. A feature that can be seen throughout the scheme.
The ground floors of the building are to be used for commercial purposes, recognizing the value of prime frontage. The car park gives passersby a glimpse of the car silhouettes echoing movement within the building, whilst breaking up what could have been a monotonous façade, an affliction with most high-rise buildings. The pool blurs the barrier between the public and the private areas of the structure, while allowing users to enjoy vistas of the Colombo skyline. The private residential area sits above the public to reinforce a sense of hierarchy between the spaces. The proposed scheme has 6 types of apartment layouts, each layout making full use of the panoramic views.
One particular apartment we would like to draw attention to is the duplex. This is a relatively novel concept to Sri Lanka, and would consequently increase the property value greatly. Each of these areas although may seem segmented all come together in unison to create an inimitable work of art to add to the effervescent Colombo skyline.
