ARCHITECTURE - 2018
The contemporary house sits on the boarders of Weras Ganga. With an undisturbed view of the body of water.
The split level house of 4 rooms also consists of a large living and dining area which opens up to a multitude of hard paved courtyards. The architectural planning of the spaces are such that they merge with the natural elements of the outdoors, making the covered living areas unify with nature.
All though titled the contemporary house, the exterior details are largely based on traditional Sri Lankan architecture whilst the interior layouts remain modern and minimal in design approach. The use of stellar timber columns, square trellised doors and windows, raw cut cement finishes, terra cotta tiling and the pitched roof details are eminent in this project to emphasize on the Lankan esthetic elements.
The amalgamation of modernism and colonial design trends native to Sri Lanka is a delicate process as both the styles are powerful in their own standing. The juxtaposition of raw exposed concrete walls which, is defined as the epitome of current day modern architecture, is used to subtlety frame the timber roof structure creating the illusion of protection to the traditional building.
